Millions of Americans who receive Social Security benefits are watching their monthly payments closely in 2026.
Each year, the government adjusts these payments to help keep up with rising prices. This adjustment is called the Cost-of-Living Adjustment, or COLA.
How Much Did Benefits Go Up?
This year's increase is smaller than what we saw in recent years. After a period of high inflation earlier in the decade, prices have started to rise more slowly. Because of this, Social Security benefits went up by about 2% to 3% in 2026.

When Do These Changes Take Effect?
The COLA increase started in January 2026. This means that by April, everyone receiving Social Security is already getting their higher payment amount.
Benefits stay the same throughout the year—there won't be another increase until next January.
Why This Year's Increase Feels Small
There are a few reasons why this year's boost might not feel like enough:
Prices are still high – Even though inflation has slowed down, things still cost a lot more than they did a few years ago.
The formula may not fit retirees' needs – The government uses a specific measure of inflation that may not accurately reflect what older Americans actually spend money on, especially healthcare costs.
Medicare premiums can eat into the increase – For some people, higher Medicare costs reduce the extra money they actually receive.
