Many people assume that Walmart always offers the lowest prices on groceries. However, a recent analysis by Consumer Reports shows that several other stores can save you even more money.
By comparing over 30 different supermarket chains, researchers found that choosing the right store can reduce your grocery bill by as much as 33%.
The Big Winners: Wholesale Clubs
The biggest savings come from "big box" stores that require a membership. According to the study, the two cheapest options in the country compared to Walmart are:
- Costco: 21.4% cheaper
- BJ’s Wholesale Club: 21% cheaper
How to save here: These stores are best for buying in bulk. You can find significant deals on household staples like cooking oils, pasta sauce, frozen fruit, cheese, and nuts. Canned goods, oatmeal, and even wine often provide better value at these clubs than at traditional retail stores.
Traditional Grocery Stores That Beat Walmart
You don’t always have to buy in bulk to save. Several standard grocery chains also offer lower prices than Walmart:
- Lidl & Aldi: Both are approximately 8% cheaper.
What to buy: Aldi is great for butter, olive oil, coffee, and eggs. Lidl offers excellent prices on spices, baking supplies, cereal, and condiments.
- WinCo Foods: 3.3% cheaper.
- H-E-B: 0.2% cheaper (essentially the same as Walmart, but slightly lower).
Where Should You Expect to Pay More?
On the other hand, some popular stores are significantly more expensive than Walmart.
- Whole Foods Market: This was the most expensive chain in the study, with prices nearly 40% higher than Walmart's.
- Target: Prices here are about 6% higher than Walmart.
- Trader Joe’s and Publix: These stores fell in the middle—more expensive than the discount chains but still popular for their specific house-brand products.
Why It Matters
While a 3% or 8% difference might seem small for a single item, these savings add up over a month or a year.
For a family spending hundreds of dollars a month on groceries, switching to a store like Costco or Aldi can save thousands of dollars annually.
In a time when food prices are a concern for many, comparing prices and being willing to try a different store is one of the best ways to keep your budget under control.
